Up North Cabin Child’s Socks

In Minnesota, it is not uncommon to hear the term Up North, which generally means anything north of the Twin cities metropolitan area. Minnesotans go “up north” in the summer as well as winter. The Land of 10,000 lakes is obviously known for spending time on, in or near the water. Boot socks are necessary in many seasons as they are ideal for hiking as well as snow skiing.  The original adult  cabin socks can be worn inside a hearty winter skiers’ boots for Nordic or downhill skiing as well as in summer while hiking on the Gunflint Trail. But I also wanted there to be a tiny version for the little ones in the family.

PATTERN NOTES: Written ‘top-down’, these socks are cast on at the cuff, then worked in the round on double pointed or circular needles to the heel. The heel flap is worked back and forth in rows, and then the heel is turned. Stitches are picked up along the heel flap, and the work is joined in the round and decreases. Instructions are written for using double pointed needles. The stitch pattern has a bit of give to it and the pattern is written for negative ease. I recommend measuring your foot and going down in size if in doubt. Alternately, it would be workable to knit the socks at a slighter tighter or looser gauge to allow for a better fit. For larger calf sizes, cast on 4-10 extra stitches, then decrease those sts as you work toward the ankle. At the given gauge 5 sts will give an extra inch of circumference.

NOTE: These socks can also be knit in fingering up for more of a baby bootie size.

GAUGE: 20 sts & 30 rnds per 4”/10 cm (5 sts & 7.5 rnds per 1”) in Andalusian stitch

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

SIZES: 1 (2)

1 = BABY 6-12 months: 6.5“ foot circumference

2 = TODDLER 2-4 years : 7.25” foot circumference

NEEDLES:  US 4 (3.50 mm) 16-inch circular and dpns.

NOTE: 2 Circular needles or the Magic Loop methods may be used (Sample yarn is woolen spun; your needle size may vary greatly if using a different yarn).

MATERIALS: 80-100 yards of worsted weight yarn

NOTIONS: Stitch markers, scrap yarn or stitch holder, tapestry needle.
