Mae’s Shawl

Description

PATTERN NOTES: This shawl is worked in one piece, flat, from end to end and includes textured and cable stitches. If using indie-dyed yarn you may wish to alternate skeins every RS row to avoid skein-to-skein dye issues.

SIZE: One Size

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: 24”/40.5 cm deep x 59”/147.5 across top edge

YARN: Lavender Lune DK Yak (80% NON-Superwash Merino wool/15% Yak; 5% Silk; 330 yds/115g) 2 skeins

NEEDLE: US size 7 (4.5mm) 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge.

US size 4 (3.5 mm) 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle, or 2-3 sizes smaller than your larger needle

GAUGE: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4″/10cm (5.5 sts and 7 rows = 1″/2.5 cm) in Stockinette Stitch

Note: Be sure to achieve washed and blocked gauge. Not achieving the correct gauge may result in needing more or less yardage.

NOTIONS:  Stitch markers, Tapestry needle.

Sample 1 in colorway Tamarack (gold) using 602 yds and weighing 201 g.

Sample 2 in colorway in Cowgirl (pink) using 607 yards and weighing 208 g.

Sample 3 in colorway Namesake (purple) using 651.3 yds and weighing 226 g.

My mother-in-law, Mae Eichelberger, was a talkative woman, who had a story for everything. A bit like me I suppose. She spent her retirement years volunteering as a “grandma” for younger elementary students. Monitoring the school cafeteria to open milk cartons, working with children who struggled to read, helping with worksheets, and listening to each little story students might have to tell. And she liked pink, with her soft white curls and rosy blushed cheeks it was a color that made her happy and suited her well. This shawl was designed in her memory. She could knit a little and would have loved the simplicity of this design because she would have been able “to manage it.”
