KNITwords Sweater

Description

A sport weight, short sleeve, round yoke sweater in 11 sizes with 3 words: KNIT, YARN and PURL.

In the fall of 2019, I was heading to the New York Sheep and Wool festival, otherwise known as Rhinebeck. The concept of the Rhinebeck sweater has been established for years and I was thinking it would be the perfect time to wear a design that I had been thinking about for a long time.
In August, my husband and I vacationed up north here in Minnesota, so I packed a large tote bag full of sport weight wool in a variety of colors and some charts I had worked up for ideas. I knit on this sweater over the next week, (while my husband fished) and sorted different colors and charts
as I worked. Eventually I decided it should be tunic length, as I wanted to include more words and abbreviations.
I received many requests to write this as a sweater pattern, but the problem lies in being able to grade the word charts to fit many sizes. So I settled on 3 words and a yoked sweater, although all the charts are included from my original sweater in case you’re a designer at heart, or a creative knitter and would like to apply your own math to your particular size and add all the words. I say: “Go for it!”

SIZES: 1 (2, 3, 4) (5, 6, 7) (8, 9, 10, 11) FINISHED BUST MEASUREMENTS:33.5 (35.75, 37.75, 40) (42.25, 46.5, 48.75) (51, 55.25, 59.75, 61.75)” / 89 (90.75, 96, 101.5) (107.25, 118, 123.75) (129.5, 140.25, 151.75, 156.75) cm Intended to be worn with positive ease.
YARN: Sport weight (100% wool, 184 yards/168 m; 1.76 oz/50 grams per skein) – 4 (5, 5, 6) (7, 7, 8) (9, 10, 11, 12) skeins / 736 (920, 920, 1104) (1288, 1288, 1472) (1656, 1840, 2024, 2208) yds total of all colors combined.

NEEDLE: US size 6 (4.0 mm) 16-inch (40 cm) and 24-inch (60 cm) circular needles and set of DPNs OR size needed to obtain gauge.
GAUGE: 22 sts and 28 rnds = 4”/10 cm (5.5 sts and 7 rnds = 1”/2.25 cm) in Stockinette Stitch colorwork
NOTIONS: Stitch markers, stitch holders, tapestry needle.
SAMPLES
The purple sample (Size 3) was knit in Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport (sport weight; 100% wool; 184 yds/168 m; 1.75 oz/50g per ball) in
colors Scarlet, Silver Charm, Spiced Plum, Grey Heather, and Brick Road. A total of 802 yds/218g were used.
The red sample (Size 5) was also knit in Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport in colors Pomegranate, Sunburst Gold, Harvest Wheat, Scarlet, French Clay, and Brick Road. A total of 972 yds/264g was used.

PATTERN NOTES
This short-sleeved sweater is worked from the neck down and has a circular yoke. Sleeve sts are held to be picked up later and worked downward. The sweater is designed for 2-3” of positive ease.

All colorwork is charted and is worked from the top of the word to the bottom, and from right to left. The sweater can be knit using 2-7 colors –

Save time and worry – buy an extra skein of your main color as your preferred length could vary from the pattern. The body is approximately 65% of the yardage needed.
