I love chevrons! My 2-year-old Bernedoodle is named Chevy (and well Mr. Irocknits is a chevy guy). But I’ve been drawn to a chevron motif for years. I designed my Lollipop Park Hat and Mittens in the winter of 2025 and then this summer I added the Dumplin’ Bag to match. I honestly just can’t get away from this easy to knit, repetitive pattern with no long floats. Choose 2 high contrast colors, or make yours using more muted tones, either way you’ll be sporting a vest that’ll serve for wearability in multiple seasons.

PATTERN NOTES: This size-inclusive vest includes two versions of the lower body – a full-length and a cropped version. It also includes two versions of the upper body – a narrow width/shoulder that is  a silhouette with more decreases and a wide width/shoulder. This is not about physique but about your preferred fit. Mix and match the options to get a version that works for you! Stitches are picked up for the neck and sleeve edges and worked in ribbing in the round. The instructions for the lower body are all grouped together. But the wide and narrow widths for the shoulders are separated. Pay close attention if you are working the narrow version – the pattern will tell you exactly what part to skip to!

PRINTING NOTE: This is a checklist pattern; it is not necessary to print the entire pattern if you prefer not to use the checkboxes for each section. The detailed charts for the upper bodies for this vest are provided in a separate file. YOU WILL NOT USE ALL OF THE CHARTS. The main chevron chart is included in this pattern, and that is all you need to work the body. Each size has it’s own set of wide and narrow widths in the separate chart PDF file. The PDF file will tell you what pages to print for your size and your chosen silhouette.

EASE: Intended to be worn with 1-2” /2.5-5 cm positive ease. To achieve this, please choose a size that is 1-2” /2.5-5 cm bigger than your bust circumference, although some knitters may prefer to pick an even larger size for more ease.

What is yarn dominance? When you knit colorwork, the stitches sit a little differently than in regular

stockinette. When you go from knitting one stitch in the MC to one in the CC, they don’t sit as perfectly as they might if they were done in the same color. For some knitters, the difference is glaring, while others hardly notice it at all. In this pattern, I carried my lighter color in my left hand throughout. I highly recommend you remain consistent in your yarn to hand placement throughout.

NEEDLE: US 6 (4 mm) 16-inch circular

US 6 (4 mm) 24-inch circular

GAUGE: 24 sts and 28 rnds/rows per 4”/10 cm (6 sts and 7 rnds per 1”/2.5 cm) in stranded chevron colorwork. Don’t forget to block your swatch.

NOTE: I knit this at a fairly tight gauge, which I like but if you prefer to use a larger needle and a looser gauge you can adjust your size down with looser tension and still knit to follow pattern.

YARN: DK weight yarn in two contrasting colors (255 yds/233 m] per 100 g)

SAMPLE, size 3, standard length with narrow shoulder shaping, was knit in Farmer’s Daughter Pishkun DK weight yarn (100% Montana and Wyoming Rambouillet wool) 255 yds (233 m)/100 grams in colorway Salmonberry (rust) and Natural and weighed 396 grams using  1009 yards. It is shown on the model with zero positive ease.

SAMPLE, size 5 standard length with narrow shoulder shaping, was knit in Farmer’s Daughter Pishkun DK weight yarn (100% Montana and Wyoming Rambouillet wool) 255 yds (233 m)/100 grams in colorway Kinnikinnick (green) and Natural and weighed 511 grams using 1303 yards. It is shown on the model with 6” of positive ease.
