Churchill Avenue Hat and Mittens. Designed as a childhood memory of snow streets with holiday lights as I grew up on a street in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where entire neighborhoods were decorated for the month of December for families to bundle up with hot chocolate in the car and slowly drive around Reindeer Lane, Lollipop Lane, Santa Claus Court and Candy Cane Lane. Car headlights were turned off; windows were cracked and one home played holiday music on an old crackly speaker.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a checklist pattern, each round is written out for easier tracking and checkboxes are placed for marking off upon completion– however, this makes the pattern significantly longer – check to see the pages you want to print before starting.

PATTERN NOTES: This bag is knit first as a flat bottom rectangle in garter stitch and then picked up around to knit the sides to the drawstring double knit top casing.  I highly recommend matching the weight of your yarn to the pattern yarn weight that is recommended. (For example: this pattern recommends worsted weight 125 grams = 275 yards. Therefore, a 100 gram skein would need to equal 220 yards. Using a skein with significantly fewer or more yards will result in a different product.)

IMPORTANT: The large size of this bag used almost the entire skein of Noel, so keep this in mind so you don’t run out of the color you want to use on certain sections.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Medium Circumference: 24.25” [61.5 cm]
Medium Base: 8” [20.5 cm] x 4.5” [11.5 cm]

Large Circumference: 28.5” [72.5 cm]
Large Base: 10” [25.5 cm] x 5.5” [14 cm]

YARN: Worsted; 275 yards/251 m = 4.4 oz/125 grams 100% Merino Wool

SAMPLE 1 – MEDIUM: Knit in Must Stash yarns Sweater Weather worsted in colors It’s Only Natural and  Rainbow weighing 110 grams using 242 yds. (Bottom, knit in Only Natural, weighed 25 grams using 55 yds. Icord drawstrings weighed 11 grams each.)
SAMPLE 2 – LARGE: Knit in Must Stash yarns Sweater Weather Worsted in colors It’s Only Natural and Noel weighing 153 grams using 421 yds. (Bottom, knit in Noel, weighed 30 grams using 66 yds which means there was not enough left over to make the icord drawstrings in the colorway.)

US size 8 [5.0 mm] 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle

NOTE: Recommended to use 2 circulars or magic loop as turning the square corners for the bottom makes the knitting quite tight to manipulate, especially in the first few rounds.

GAUGE: 23 sts and 24 rnds per 4”/10cm (5.75 sts and 6 rnds per 1”/2.5 cm) in corrugated stockinette stitch
NOTE: Base of the bag is knit tighter on one size smaller needle for stability.
